Conversation Stoppers for Your Thanksgiving Zoom

Like many of you, our family will be celebrating Thanksgiving by Zoom this year.  My older brother and younger sister both live in the D.C. area, and my parents have recently all but moved there to help out the raising the next generation of Cashmans.  While we typically all meet at my sister’s house in person for the great Cashman feast, this year we will be eating separately, but sharing stories via Zoom.  My older brother has recently declared that we all need to prepare a “skit” for the occasion.  Not sure what that means but hope to have something fun to report in the coming blogs.

If you are a frequently reader of this blog, you may recall a piece I did some time ago suggesting some ways to ease into the estate planning discussion.  (Link: How to Start the Estate Planning Discussion).  If you, or your loved ones, still don’t have an estate plan, the article points out that you are in ridiculously good company.  And if it makes you feel any better, know that my parents have a son who practices estate planning and it took my older brother to finally get them to a place where they got theirs’ done. You think they would know better, especially since my dad is a retired judge. Believe me, I feel your pain.

I recently came across a March 4, 2020 study published by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.  If you still need another reason in these times to motivate you to complete your estate plan, the AICPA Survey provided some disturbing (but not surprising), recent statistics from a number of CPA’s who are experiencing clients with signs of dementia, diminished capacity, and increased incidents of fraud.

Takeaway

I hope you find the article of use.  At the very least, if you are looking for few good segues from that awkward holiday dinner conversation (or apparently holiday skit) onto a more productive topic, please check out the article.  Hope you find it of use.
